TTF: Learning by Doing
September 11, 2025
This weekly email is my curated selection of interesting and useful topics related to BIM, design, and technology. I aim to provide you with some good information and a few laughs along the way. What did I find interesting this week? Read down to find out!
I've been deep in planning mode this week, preparing for next week's Revit Add-in Workshop. There's something really satisfying about organizing knowledge into digestible, actionable chunks. Whether structuring a workshop curriculum or breaking down complex Revit workflows into manageable steps, you must keep the learner on the other end in mind. It got me thinking about how we approach learning in our industry, which ties perfectly into this week's final article. Speaking of learning, here are five things worth your time this week.
#1: Revit Automation Workshop
I'm excited to share that I'm hosting a hands-on Revit Add-in Workshop next week! Whether you're looking to automate repetitive tasks, create custom tools for your team, or understand what's possible with the Revit API, this workshop will give you the foundation you need. Perfect timing as we head into the busy project season when every minute counts!

#2: The Architect as Brand
In this thoughtful podcast episode, Bob Borson and Andrew Hawkins dive into personal branding for architects. They explore how to authentically represent yourself and your work in an increasingly connected world. The discussion covers everything from social media strategy to positioning yourself as an expert without appearing pretentious. Good stuff!

#3: Tips for Architecture Students
As the new school year begins, Archinect offers practical advice for architecture students navigating their studies. While aimed at students, these tips are surprisingly relevant for anyone looking to grow in the AEC field. The emphasis on developing technical skills and design thinking resonates with what I see in successful professionals. It's not enough to know the software; you need to understand the why behind the process.

#4: Burning Man Projects Over the Years
Building from last week's link from BWC Architects, this week, they're sharing a look at their Burning Man projects over the years. From signage to massive mobile art installations like the Serpent Twins, BWC shows how architectural skills translate into temporary, experimental structures. It's a great reminder that our skills can be applied beyond traditional buildings, and sometimes the most creative work happens when we step outside our usual project types.

#5: The One-Month Knowledge Sprint
Scott H. Young outlines a robust framework for rapid learning that could change how we approach professional development in AEC. The concept is simple: pick a focused area of improvement and dedicate one month to intensive learning and action. I love that this approach balances reading and learning with actual doing. It's not enough to know; you need to practice too!

That's all from me. Hope you have a productive week ahead!
