TTF: The Comeback Edition!

Jun 19, 2025

June 19, 2025

Hey there! It's been a while since last Thursday's Top 5 newsletter. I'm sorry for the radio silence. Things have been busy here at ArchSmarter headquarters. I'll fill you in over the next few weeks. But the important thing is that I've got some great content to share with you this week. From vibe coding to crash forensics to career advice, we're covering a lot of ground. Let's get started!

#1: Vibe Coding: The Future of Revit Tool Development?

Want to create custom Revit tools without writing hundreds of lines of code? In my latest blog post, I explore "vibe coding" – an AI-first approach to software development changing how we build Revit automation. I demonstrated this concept during a recent workshop by creating four production-ready tools using nothing but plain language descriptions, AI assistance, and my custom vibe coding platform. Want to learn more about how I did this? Click the link below!

#2: Revit Crash Forensics with Bimbeats

If you've ever wanted to throw your computer out the window after a Revit crash, this one's for you. Konrad Sobon from archi-lab dives deep into crash analysis using Bimbeats, showing how to turn those frustrating "fatal error" messages into actionable insights. The article walks through tracking crash patterns, identifying problematic users and models, and even digging into journal files to find root causes. In one example, they discovered a video driver error during multi-view printing was causing repeated crashes, and fixing it with a driver update significantly reduced crashes. Now that's what I call turning lemons into lemonade!

#3: Demystifying the Common Data Environment

Autodesk's latest blog post tackles the Common Data Environment (CDE) – one buzzword everyone nods to but might not fully understand. The article breaks down what a CDE actually is and why it matters for AEC professionals. This topic is crucial for anyone managing project data across teams. If you're still sending Revit files back and forth (please tell me you're not!), this is definitely worth checking out.

#4: Boston Through an Architect's Eyes

Archinect launches its new City Guide series with a tour of Boston through the eyes of Eric Höweler from Höweler + Yoon. This isn't your typical tourist guide – it's a design-minded exploration of the city's best spots for creative inspiration. From intimate sushi bars to iconic buildings like Boston City Hall (my favorite), Höweler shares his go-to places for everything from casual meals to architectural pilgrimages. The MIT campus tour alone is worth the read, featuring buildings by Gehry, NADAAA, and Steven Holl. I'm looking forward to my next trip to Beantown!

#5: Career Advice That Actually Makes Sense

Scott Young delivers some refreshingly honest career advice that goes beyond the usual "follow your passion" platitudes. His insights include why college is more about proving abilities than job training, why "cool" careers tend to be overrated (higher competition!), and why where you work matters more than how hard you work. My favorite takeaway? Early jobs are for learning, not earning. I wish someone had told me that when I was starting out! This is essential reading for anyone early in their career or considering a change.

That's all from me. I hope you're having a great week.

Michael

TT5: Good Taste, Questionable Ideas
January 15, 2026 Happy New Year! I hope 2026 is off to a great start for you.   Over the holidays, I found myself at an arcade with my kids. While they ran off to the racing games, I gravitated toward the classic. Standing there pumping quarters into a vintage machine from 1981, a ridiculous thought popped into my head: What if I built something like this inside Revit? Normally, I'd laugh that ...
